Alan Rickman, a British actor who is known for playing the role of Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies passed away. He was 69.

Rickman was born in Acton, west London, in 1946. He finished his degree at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career on stage after graduating, appearing in productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Rickman got his big acting break appearing the Broadway version of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" in the mid-1980s before making his first major film appearance in "Die Hard" soon afterwards.

"Die Hard" was his first major performances as a villain, other film appearances includes the Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." In addition to the Potter films, he also starred in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", "Truly Madly Deeply", and "Love, Actually".

In a statement his family said he had died after a battle with cancer.
