LOS ANGELES — The much-anticipated and critically-acclaimed Lionsgate musical“La La Land” was released this weekend in limited theaters. It was the largest per-location-average of the year and one of the biggest such launches of all time. In five locations, the movie garnered $855,000, one of the best limited-release results on record. The total surpassed the initial outcome for “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which became a runaway indie hit in 2014.
The movie which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling and directed by Damien Chazelle cost $30 million to make. Movie critics expects it to be the film to beat at the coming Academy Awards. Speaking of awards, at the Critics' Choice Awards which took placed in Santa Monica airport, the dance-musical won best picture along with 7 other awards, which includes best director for Damien Chazelle, best original screenplay (a tie with Manchester by the Sea) and best song.
