Olivia Rodrigo's 'Vampire': A Song of Heartbreak and Revenge
Olivia Rodrigo has stunned fans once again with the release of her new single and music video, "Vampire". The edgy pop-punk track has already received over 300,000 views in its first minute on YouTube and has fans speculating that it might be about her ex and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar, Joshua Bassett. However, Olivia has insisted that the song is "a work of fiction" and "not about any one person".
Regardless of whom the song may or may not be about, "Vampire" sees Olivia channeling feelings of anger, revenge and heartache in a bold new musical direction. The track features distorted guitar riffs, pounding drums and Olivia's powerful vocals as she sings about a toxic ex-lover who "sucks the life out of everyone he meets". The music video, directed by Petra Collins, features a menacing, vampire-like version of Olivia stalking and tormenting her ex.

In a tweet announcing the song's release, Olivia said "writing this song helped me sort through lots of feelings of regret, anger, and heartache. it’s one of my favorite songs on the album and it felt very cathartic to finish." She thanked co-writer Daniel Nigro and director Petra Collins for helping bring the track to life.

The dark pop tone and emotionally charged lyrics of "Vampire" show a new side to Olivia's artistry, demonstrating her talent for channeling complex feelings into catchy, anthemic pop songs. While we don't know the true inspiration behind the track, one thing is clear - "Vampire" proves that Olivia Rodrigo is just getting started.

LYRICS: Olivia Rodrigo's Vampire
hate to give the satisfaction asking how you’re doing now
how’s the castle built off people you pretend to care about
just what you wanted
look at you, cool guy, you got it
i see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when i close my eyes
six months of torture
that you sold as some forbidden paradise
i loved you truly
gotta laugh at the stupidity
cuz i’ve made some real big mistakes
but you make the worst one look fine
i should’ve known it was strange
you only come out at night
i used to think i was smart
but you made
me look so naive
the way you sold me for parts
as you sunk your teeth into me, oh
bloodsucker, famefucker
bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire
every girl i ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
you called them crazy god i hate the way i called them crazy too
you’re so convincing
how do you lie without flinching
(how do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie)
oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked up little thrill
can’t figure out just how you do it and god knows i never will
went for me and not her
cuz girls your age know better
i’ve made some real big mistakes
but you make the worst one look fine
i should’ve known it was strange
you only come out at night
i used to think i was smart
but you made me look so naive
the way you sold me for parts
as you sunk your teeth into me, oh
bloodsucker, famefucker
bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire
you said it was true love
but wouldn’t that be hard
you can’t love anyone
cuz that would mean you had a heart
i tried you help you out
now i know that i can’t
cuz how you think’s the kind of thing
i’ll never understand
i’ve made some real big mistakes
but you make the worst one look fine
i should’ve known it was strange
you only come out at night
i used to think i was smart
but you made me look so naive
the way you sold me for parts
as you sunk your teeth into me, oh
bloodsucker, famefucker
bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire
